It's a homage ceremony. There, a vasal is swearing allegiance to yhe noble and the noble will give him land and protection.

I think that represente an homage ceremony, in this ceremony are a vassal an a king. The vassal promised swear an oath of loyalty to the king and ask for help to hem.

ReplyDeleteThis image represents an homage ceremony. In this ceremony, the vassal (it could be a peasant or a noble) was kneeling in front of the king or noble promising allegiance. Then, the senior gave hime a symbol of the fief or manor( It could be some land, a sword...)

It is a feudal ceremony in which a vassal revered and meekly agreed to swear allegiance to his feudal lord, was (usually knees), the osculum (kiss), the inmixtio manum (vassal's hands, united in position prayer, were welcomed among the Lord), and a sentence to recognize her man have become the tribute was produced after the inauguration (of the lord to vassal), representing the delivery of a fief (depending on the status of vassal and lord could be a county, a ducat, a brand, a castle, town, or just a paycheck, or even a monastery if it was ecclesiastical vassalage) through a symbol of the territory or food that should the vassal lord (a little land) and the backing, in which the vassal received a sword (and a hit with her shoulders) or a staff if he was religious.

ReplyDeleteWell, I think that this image is showing a homage ceremony where are a nobel or a king and a vassal.The peasant is promising to the nobel help and fidelity kissing his hands and for the allegiance of the vassal the nobel is going to give to him some land,allowance,... and for prove that, the nobel must deliver to the peasant a symbolic element such a sword.

This picture represents a homage ceremony. In it the vassal is kneeling in front of the king giving him homage and allegiance. And for that the king give to the vassal a symbol that means that now he had a fief.

They are the king and his vassal (probably a nobleman)
The noble kneels down and put his hands in the king´s ones as a sign of allegiance and fidelity. (This is called inmixtio manum)
After that, the king gives to the vassal one object as a symbol of the land or the title that he receives (this part is called the investiture)
The agreement is sealed by a kiss on the mouth (osculum)
