Problems with decimals

Hi boys and girls,

Here you have a list of problems about decimal numbers. You have to copy them in your notebooks, solve and write the answers as a comment. Good luck!

1. If 58 out of 100 students in a school are boys, then write a decimal for the part of the school that consists of boys.

2. Five swimmers are entered into a competition. Four of the swimmers have had their turns. Their scores are 9.8 s, 9.75 s, 9.79 s, and 9.81 s. What score must the last swimmer get in order to win the competition?

3. Ellen wanted to buy the following items: A DVD player for $49.95, a DVD holder for $19.95 and a personal stereo for $21.95. Does Ellen have enough money to buy all three items if she has $90 with her?

4. Melissa purchased $39.46 in groceries at a store. The cashier gave her $1.46 in change from a $50 bill. Melissa gave the cashier an angry look. What did the cashier do wrong?

5. Patricia has $425.82 in her checking account. How much does she have in her account after she makes a deposit of $120.75 and a withdrawal of $185.90?

6. One trader buys 125 dresses fo r 13,20 € /each. Knowing that he wants to take 5 units to show in his shop and he wants to win 450 € in total. What is the price of the dresses?

7. One kilo and a quarter of fish costs 15,75 €. How much does each kilo cost? Calculate the cost of another fish of 1 kilo and a half.

8. Carmen bought one shirt and one skirt by 89 €. If the skirt costs the double than the shirt, calculate the prize of each.

Happy birthday Mr Dickens

Today we are celebrating Charles Dickens' 200th birthday . I’m sure you know some things about this great English writer. He wrote about difficult lives in the “modern” city that London was in the Victorian times. He created characters which are still very well known – Ebeneezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim, Pip and Miss Havisham, Fagin and Oliver Twist. And he wrote such great books as “David Copperfield”, “Oliver Twist”, “Great Expectations” or “A Christmas Carol”.

Nowadays Dickens is more actual than ever. "You only have to look around our society and everything he wrote about in the 1840s is still relevant," said Dickens' biographer, Claire Tomalin. "The great gulf between the rich and poor, corrupt financiers, corrupt Members of Parliament ... You name it, he said it."

We have already started the second term. I hope you are enjoying the sport acrobatic gymnastics classes. Although I really think you are!

As I have told you in class, you will find the specific vocabulary you are going to need for these classes here.

Don´t forget you have to make the sport acrobatic gymnastics security rules poster by next Wednesday, February 8th.

We´ll talk about your composition in groups for the practical exam next week. Meanwhile, maybe, you will find the following sport acrobatic gymnastics videos interesting.

A review of Decimals

Hi my dear students,

this unit is called Decimal Numbers, those who have a decimal point.The decimal point is the most important part of a Decimal Number. It is exactly to the right of the Units position. Without it, we would be lost ... and not know what each position meant.

Each place in a number has a different place value. Below is a chart that shows the different place values in a number. As we look at this diagram, notice the spelling changes from the places to the left of the decimal point (which represent places for whole numbers) and the decimal places to the right of the decimal point.

Ordering decimals can be tricky. Because often we look at 0.42 and 0.402 and say that 0.402 must be bigger because there are more digits. But no!

If you follow the following method you will see which decimals are bigger. 
  • Set up a table with the decimal point in the same place for each number.
  • Put in each number.
  • Fill in the empty squares with zeros.
  • Compare using the first column on the left, and pick out the highest in order.
  • If the digits are equal move to the next column to the right until one number wins.

Rounding off a decimal is a technique used to estimate or approximate values. Rounding is most commonly used to limit the amount of decimal places. Instead of having a long string of decimals places, or even one that goes on forever, we can approximate the value of the decimal to a specified decimal place.

When to Round Up
Rounding up means that we increase the terminating digit by a value of 1 and drop off the digits to the right. If the next place beyond where we are terminating the decimal is greater than or equal to five, we round up.
When to Round Down

If the number to the right of our terminating decimal place is four or less (4, 3, 2, 1, 0), we round down. This is done by leaving our last decimal place as it is given and discarding all digits to its right.
