CHRISTMAS RECIPE

Now Christmas is in the air here´s a very sweet and delicious recipe from Scotland, called TABLET, that is really easy to make. You can chop it up into chunks or slices and then wrap them in cellophane and ribbon and they make really nice gifts for a friend. Or you can just eat it yourself!

You need:
1kg of white sugar
1 tin of condensed milk
100g of unsalted butter
a little fresh milk to dampen the sugar

Preparation time : 20 minutes

1. put sugar in a pan and dampen it with a little milk (not too much - less than half a cup)
2. add butter and the condensed milk and turn on heat to medium.
3. keep stirring until the mixture comes to the boil (approx. 10 mins)
4. its important not to burn the sugar so keep stirring.
5. when it starts to boil turn down the heat.
6. keep stirring to stop the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
7. let the mixture simmer (that is keep it bubbling but not too hot)
8. the volume often increases so you need to use a big saucepan.
9. notice the mixture will begin to change colour. It will start going darker.
10. keep stirring and then when you feel a change in consistency (it will start to feel grainy on the bottom of the pan and the mix will thicken) you need to check that its ready.
11. take a little of the mixture on a teaspoon and plunge it into a glass of cold water. It should form a soft sticky ball that should drip off the spoon very slowly. If it does this then it is ready.
12. quickly pour the mix on a greased baking tray and let it set hard.
13. wash the saucepan immediately or it will be difficult to clean when the mix dries.
14. keep in fridge overnight.
15. cut into chunks or small slices.
16. ENJOY.

HAVE A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND SEE YOU ALL IN THE NEW YEAR!!!!
LOTS OF LOVE, KATE

Erathostenes Sieve

The Sieve of Eratosthenes is an ancient method for finding all primes numbers up to a specified number.

It was created by Eratosthenes (275-194 B.C., Greece), an ancient Greek mathematician. Just as a sieve is a strainer for draining spaghetti, Eratosthenes's sieve drains out composite numbers and leaves prime numbers behind. The numbers from 1 to 100 are listed in a table. We will use The Sieve of Eratosthenes to find all primes up to the number 100 by following the directions below.

Directions:

  1. Cross out 1 since it is not prime.
  2. Circle 2 because it is the smallest prime number. Cross out every multiple of 2.
  3. Circle the next open number, 3. Now cross out every multiple of 3.
  4. Circle the next open number, 5. Now cross out every multiple of 5.
  5. Circle the next open number, 7. Now cross out every multiple of 7.
  6. Continue this process until all numbers in the table have been circled or crossed out.
You have just circled all the prime numbers from 1 to 100!

Questions:

1. How many prime numbers are there from 1 to 100?
2. List all prime numbers from 1 to 100.
3. Which number is the only even prime number?
4. An emirp (prime spelled backwards) is a prime that gives you a different prime when its digits are reversed. For example, 13 and 31 are emirps. List all emirps between 1 and 100.

Enjoy it!

Divisibility Rules

Here it is the Power Point presentation done in Math class in the European Section in 1º ESO. We divided the class in groups of 2 or 3 people, then each group worked on a divisibility rule. We put everything together and here it is the result, I hope you like it.

TUTANKHAMON´S TOMB EXPOSITION

Our pupils from the 1st and 2nd year of ESO visited Tutankhamon´s tomb exposition in Madrid last october 7th. All of them are wonderful. Congratulations! Here you have one of the best works. Enjoy it!

Click on the photograph to download the file. (As it is a zip file, you have to extract all in the same folder. Then you´ll be able to listen to the music.)
